Virginia, also known as the Old Dominion State, currently has a population of about 8.6 million, making it the 12th most populous state in the US. Its summers range from warm to hot, with the average high temperature at 86°F (30°C) at the peak of July. Winters are frigid, with average low temperatures dropping to 26°F (-3.3°C) at the peak of the cold season in January.
Virginia is vulnerable to thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and snowstorms. In fact, it once placed 11th in the top states with the number of major hail events in 2011. Interestingly, the biggest hail recorded in this state was a 5-inch hail spotted in two different counties in 1968. In summary, there were a total of 49 hailstorms from 2009 to 2018. The worst yet was the storm of 2012 in Roanoke, costing $1.8 million in property damage.
