South Dakota, with a 2020 population of less than a million, is the 47th most populous state in the US. It has an average temperature of 45.2°F (7.3°C). In this state, January is the coldest month of the year while July is the hottest.
In addition, South Dakota has a temperate continental type of climate with warm and moderately humid summers and dry and cold winters. It is also prone to thunderstorms and tornadoes, mainly in the southeastern part of the state that lies in the Tornado Alley of the country, during late spring and early summer.
South Dakota has always been consistently among the top states with the number of major hail events. Moreover, the worst hailstorm that ever hit the state was the 2013 storm in Pennington , costing $32.5 million in property damage.
