South Carolina, also known as the Palmetto State, currently has a population of about 5.2 million, making it the 23rd most populous state in the US. It has an average temperature of 62.4°F (16.9°C). January is the coldest month of the year in South Carolina. July, on the other hand, is usually the hottest with average high temperatures in the high range of 79°F to 95°F.
South Carolina is prone to thunderstorms, floods, droughts, tornadoes, hurricanes, and tropical cyclones. In fact, it once placed 18th in the top states with the number of major hail events in 2011. Interestingly, the biggest hail recorded in this state was a 4.5-inch hail spotted in four different counties over time. In summary, a total of 424 hailstorms were recorded from 2009 to 2018 and the worst yet was the storm of 2014 in Spartanburg, costing $8.5 million in property damage.
