Kentucky, also known as the Bluegrass State, currently has a population of about 4.5 million, making it the 26th most populous state in the US. It has an average temperature of 55.6°F (13.1°C). In addition, January is the coldest month of the year in the state while July is the hottest. Further, May is the rainiest month along with the highest number of storms. Moreover, Kentucky is vulnerable to tornadoes, thunderstorms, floods, and droughts in spring and summer. Thunderstorms occur routinely during the spring and summer, while ice storms are not rare in the winter.
In fact, Kentucky once placed 16th in the top states with the number of major hail events in 2011. Interestingly, the biggest hail recorded in this state was a 5-inch hail spotted in Harlan County on April 23, 1968, 13:00 CST. In summary, there were a total of 87 hailstorms from 2009 to 2018. The worst hailstorm that hit the state was the 2012 storm in Wolfe, costing $2 million in property damage.
