Idaho, also known as the Gem State, currently has a population of about 1.8 million, making it the 39th most populous state in the US. It has an average temperature of 44.4°F (6.9°C). In addition, January is the coldest month of the year in the state while July is the hottest. Also, Idaho is prone to thunderstorms and flooding in late spring and early summer. Hailstorms occasionally damage crops during spring as well as summer, but the size of hail rarely extends half an inch in diameter.
In fact, Idaho once placed 43rd in the top states with the number of major hail events in 2011. Interestingly, the biggest hail recorded in this state was a 3-inch hail spotted in Lewis County on July 14, 1975, 16:30 CST. In summary, there were a total of 24 hailstorms from 2009 to 2018. The worst hailstorm that hit the state was the 2018 storm in Bonneville, costing $29.8 million in property damage.
