hail damage car insurance

Year after year, Texas remains at the #1 spot for the most hailstorms than any other state. San Antonio and Houston are at the peak of the summer hail season! And we know that means hail damage and dealing with car insurance claims.

Every day, our customers have questions surrounding their insurance company and working with us. Auto insurance is a required and mandatory expense in owning a car, but what is actually covered?

We’ve outlined everything you need to know about your car insurance type when it comes to hail down below.

The Basics of Auto Insurance

To begin with, most auto insurance providers start with basic coverage in property, liability, and medical expenses. However, do note that the coverage provided is the bare minimum.

  • Property – coverage on theft or damages to your vehicle.
  • Liability – coverage on your obligation to individuals in your vehicle.
  • Medical – coverage on injuries within your vehicle.

When you first sign with your insurance company, you decide your monthly premium. And based on your premium, your deductible is decided! A deductible is your out-of-pocket expense when you file an insurance claim. With a higher monthly premium, you will have a lower deductible and vice versa.

Does Liability Insurance Cover Hail Damage?

No, but it does cover other things!

Liability insurance is a mandatory coverage in most states by law. But, the law does differ from state to state. In Colorado, it’s mandatory to have a liability insurance up to a certain minimum coverage.

Texas, on the other hand, requires proof of some sort that you are able to pay for the damages. For most people, this still means acquiring the basic liability, comprehensive, and collision insurance up to a certain liability amount ($30,000 for personal injury, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damages).

Does Car Insurance Cover Storm Damage?

Besides the mandatory coverage, insurance companies do offer add-on coverages that many people take advantage of. These add-on coverages are collision and comprehensive insurance:

  • Collision – this type of coverage is for when you’re the one at fault for a collision with another vehicle or another object.
  • Comprehensive – this usually covers natural elements such as a fallen tree or a bad hailstorm.

So Does Car Insurance Cover Hail Damage?

Under a comprehensive insurance plan, yes!

Colorado and Texas do not require comprehensive insurance, but it’s a great plan to include in your monthly premiums. If you live in Texas, Colorado, or Florida, you know hailstorms happen every year.

Comprehensive insurance is your protection against mother nature’s fury.

Monthly Premium Rising?

With the nation’s best interest in mind, the United States government regulates insurance companies. It’s a billion-dollar industry, and to protect people like you from getting taken advantage of, there are rules in place to prevent this.

Insurance companies can be fined for not following legal laws set in place. However, those same legal laws are what allow them to determine your price from the beginning. Depending on your chosen insurance company, there may be discounts for things like being a student or if you have a good credit score.

Insurance companies are regulated by the government so that they can’t take advantage of you during this vulnerable time. Each state has an elected official or company that oversees the insurance companies in that state.

In Colorado, Michael Conway is your insurance regulator. He works closely with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

In Texas, the Texas Department of Insurance regulates insurance companies.

And in Florida, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (FLOIR) oversees insurance companies.

If you think you’ve been a victim of your insurance company raising your premiums illegally, they can be fined by federal law if they did not get the proper approval. It varies state by state for what government official is regulating the insurance companies.

Don’t Lose Out on Money You’re Entitled To

One way insurance companies can raise your premiums is if they get approval using probable cause. This can mean that there was a bad hailstorm that took over your city or state, and these insurance companies are receiving a multitude of claims. Even if you yourself did not file a claim during that period of time, your insurance premiums can increase regardless. You are paying to protect your vehicle, so don’t lose out on the benefits associated with it especially when a hailstorm comes around!

Is there a Hail Damage Insurance Claim Time Limit in Texas?

Yes! In Texas, there is a 2 year time frame to file your insurance claim.

But, we don’t recommend putting off your hail damage that long. The longer you wait to fix your hail damage, the more problems it can cause if you get into another accident, or even just let the damage cause rust or paint peeling to your exterior.
